What is website conversion rate? It is the most important metric you need to track for your business since it will help your determine the success of your website to get people to buy the product or service you are promoting.

The website conversion rate measures the ratio of those who are customers paying for your product or service to those who visited your website. The more visitors to your website who become paying customers the more your sales improve with the given amount of visitor traffic you get to your site.

The reason this is important is that it affects the bottom line of your business and determines whether your efforts are paying off or being wasted. The bottom line is that you need to do what is best for your business and what is best to get your customers to want to buy your product or service.

There are many reasons why your website may not be converting the visitors you are getting to paying customers at a rate which would generate greater profits for your website. The reasons involve website design, knowledge of your target market, content which does not speak to your visitors, and/or simply a lack of focus on the product or service and how it will benefit the visitor enough to buy.

You can work toward increasing your website sales by testing your website design. You can do this first by checking out your competition in your target market. This can be done by looking at your leading competitors and seeing what they are doing with their websites. They would know what is working and can shorten your learning curve.

Of course, you also need to learn about the visitors of the marketplace to whom you are targeting your sales campaign. You can do this by looking for blogs and forums which they visit or joining groups in social media sites like Facebook or MySpace. When you do this you will be able to gather information and actually generate a relationship with your potential customers.

After you have done the above you can revisit your site design and content and see what you can do to improve it to match the profile of your customer. While you are doing this you will look at many variables and decide which you would like to test by creating a multivariate test. A multivariate test is done by selecting many different portions of your site design and content to be tested and using a tool which will present your website with the changes to each variable along with tracking information of what customers did for each variable change. The changes which increased conversion of visitors to paying customers are the ones you will keep while discarding those that were less successful.

There are other methods you can use as well. You can provide contests as an incentive to your visitors to buy. You can also focus on your customer because it is all about how what you are promoting with your website benefits them.
