Pay-per-click (PPC) marketing, also known as paid search can be a black hole for newbies. Beginners are attracted to the simplicity of the PPC model, where one can drive traffic virtually instantly to any web page they want usually for a low cost-per-click. Their cash is then subsequently sucked out of their credit cards because they either forget to monitor their campaigns or they put up bad campaigns to begin with. Plus, they never followed the following three tips for getting started with PPC marketing:

1. Do your homework (research).
The search engines will reward your ads for relevancy. The more relevant your ads are, the higher they’ll rank and the less you’ll have to pay for those rankings. The first step towards achieving higher relevancy is to do your keyword research.
Let’s say you want to drive traffic to your landing page where you want to build a list. First, find common keyword phrases in your niche to target. Then, generate long tail keywords by adding modifiers to those broad keywords. “Golf” is a broad keyword, while “how to improve your golf swing” is a long tail keyword. You can expect to pay well over a dollar per click for broad keywords. On the other hand, long tail keywords have far less competition because less people search for those terms, so get used to paying less than a quarter per click for these terms.
2. Stay relevant.
This relates to tip #1, but having a relevant campaign will drastically increase your ROI. There are a few components of an ad campaign, many of which can be optimized for relevancy.
For example, as previously mentioned, your keywords need to be relevant. If you try displaying a weight loss ad for an online marketing keyword, the search engines are going to slap you with a ridiculously high cost-per-click. Therefore, your ad copy also needs to be relevant. Ideally, you should include the full keyword in your ad copy. This means creating a new ad for each of your keywords. It seems like a lot of work now, but it’ll save you a lot of money in the long run.
Another important part of your campaign which needs to be optimized is your landing page. Basically, your main keywords need to be found a few times on your landing page in places like the domain name, the headline, and the body text.
The bottom line — someone who clicks on your ad expecting to see a solution for a receding hair line and, instead finds a website for your home business opportunity is going to get you whacked by the search engines, whose goal is relevancy for the user.

3. Don’t “set and forget”.
There’s no such thing as autopilot profits with PPC – you have to constantly monitor, test, and tweak your ad campaigns to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Your cost-per-click could suddenly jump, for example, and you’ll want to be there when it does to compensate for it. Some of your ads could suddenly start experiencing a low click-through rate, in which case you would want to test new ad copy, test new keywords, or dump the ad. It takes constant monitoring to ensure that you pay as little as possible per click, achieve the best rankings, and get the best click-through rates. It’s a lot of work, but it pays massive dividends.

When you are looking to make sure that interested people are finding your website, you will find that banner advertising is a method of getting their attention that you need to think about. Banner advertising is essentially the use of a visual ad on someone’s site that will provide a link back to yours, and you will find that this can be a great way to allow people to find your work through a related site. Before you get started with banner ads, though there are a few basics that you should keep in mind.

In the first place, take some time to carefully design your banner ads. If you are feeling uncertain, and if you have the money, get someone with some experience to put them together for you. Good design and an attractive look are quite important. You will want to make sure that your site has a place for people to download some banner ads and to put them up on their own site should they want to give you some free advertising!

For the most part, you will find that your banner ads will be posted through networks of similar websites. There are plenty of networks out there that you can join where you will be asked to provide some advertising space on your website in exchange for having your banner up on someone else’s site. This type of exchange, when the network is focused on targeting and making sure that only relevant sits join, can be instrumental in making sure that you get your site marketed correctly.

You will find that you should start by doing your research. What networks are going to be focusing on the right clients for your site? Some networks are extremely tightly focused, but small, while others are very large, but cover sites that only have a very small amount of things in common. Think about who you believe your market is, and make sure that the sites where your ad will appear will be places that they frequent.

When you are thinking about banner advertising, also keep an eye on what is going up on your site. In some exchanges, you need to put two ads in exchange for having one of your ads put up somewhere. Make sure that you integrate the ads on your site harmoniously, and make sure that you think about what you can do to ensure that the ads you put up are things that your audience wants to see.

Banner advertising can be quite profitable for you in the long run, so take some time and make sure that you are going to get your money’s worth out of it!

Those heavily involved with PPC marketing understand that not every person who clicks on an ad will make a purchase. It would be purely fantastical to assume that 80% of the people who click on your ads will buy. After all, not everyone who visits a department store buys anything. And yes, there will also those that will click through who never had any interest in making a purchase. They just want to look at your website for informational purposes and you have to pay for these clicks regardless. Now, this is to be expected and it is not worth dwelling over. The way to overcome the problem is to maximize your potential as far as converting customers. But, you can only do so much if someone is purposely committing click fraud against you.

There are those who may purposely click on your PPC ads solely for the purpose of driving up your costs and reducing the number of ads you place on the internet. This also depletes the money in your account reducing the amount of time your ads are floating on the internet. Such problematic people need to be stopped from further eroding your business’ ad campaign. The way to do this is to review your campaign’s analytical data and look for suspicious details that would indicate such a problem is occurring.

How is this possible? It can be achieved through the use of ad tracking tools that can display information in a clear manner. A close overview of highly detailed and accurate statistical data will show when and where a click fraud problem is emerging. From this, it becomes possible to take the steps required to cease such fraud and abuse and protect your business. Once again, proper ad tracking tools can help deliver such help.

People who commit malicious click are no different than any other type of person – they are creatures of habit. That means they will have a tendency to be very predictable in their behavior. Upon looking at an analyzer tool or PPC tracking program, you can pinpoint a number of their common traits in order to take proper steps to deal with them.

For example, the data on your click through statistic will notate the time of the clicks, the date, where the person was referred, and even URL and IP information. If the same IP has clicked on 10 ads on the same day this might be a clear indication of click fraud. If a pattern of this type of behavior starts becomes evident in your PPC tracking stats, then it may be likely you are dealing with malicious click fraud.

Logging such data becomes helpful when it comes time to report the information to the PPC host. Simply stating you believe you are a victim of click fraud may not be enough to receive a refund. You may need to prove your case. Presenting the host with detailed analytical data can definitely help sway opinions on your favor. This may allow you to receive a return credit for the money you were charged due to fraud.

But, the key here is that you must stay on top of all your statistical data and analytical reports. If you fall behind and do not notice the click fraud when it occurs, it can prove difficult to fix things after they are too far gone.

You can immerse yourself in all the technical information available online to figure out how to optimize your web pages to achieve higher rankings. Or you can look at a few simple items on your pages, make some small adjustments, and most likely see improved rankings quite rapidly. The first item you should examine is the title bar on your homepage.

The title bar is the colored bar at the top of the page. Look at the words that appear there when you access your home page. To increase search engine rankings, the words on your homepage’s title bar should include the most important keywords or phrases, one of which would include your company name.

Then click on all your links and examine the title bars on the pages you access. Each title bar on every single page of your site should contain the most important keywords and phrases taken from the page itself. However, avoid very long strings of keywords, keeping them to six words or less. Avoid repeating keywords more than once in the title bars, and make sure that identical words are not next to each other.

The next item to put under your microscope is your website content. Search engines generally list sites that contain quality content rather than scintillating graphics. The text on your site must contain the most important keywords – the words that potential customers will be typing into search engines to find your site.

Aim to have around 250 words on each page, but if this is not desirable due to your design, aim for at least 100 carefully chosen words. If you want to achieve a high ranking on search engines, this text is essential. However, the search engines must be able to read the text, meaning that the text must be in HTML and not graphic format.

To find out if your text is in HTML format, take your cursor and try to highlight a word or two. If you are able to do this, the text is HTML. If the text will not highlight, it is probably in graphic form. In this case, ask your webmaster to change the text into HTML format in order to increase your search engine rankings.

Next we come to what is called meta tags. I know this sounds like something out of science fiction, but it is really just simple code. Many people believe that meta tags are the key to high search engine rankings, but in reality, they only have a limited effect. Still, it’s worth adding them in the event that a search engine will use meta tags in their ranking formula.

To find out if your page is set up with meta tags, you must access the code. To do this, click the “view” button on the browser menu bar, and select “source.” This will pull up a window revealing the underlying code that created the page. If there are meta tags, they usually appear near the top of the window. For example, a meta tag would read: meta name=”keywords” content=. If you do not find code that reads like this, ask your webmaster to put them in. This may not do much for your search engine rankings, but any little boost helps.

Lastly, we come to the issue of link popularity. This is a factor that is extremely important in terms of search engine rankings. Almost all search engines use link popularity to rank your website. Link popularity is based on the quality of the sites you have linked to from your links page.

If you type in “free link popularity check” in a popular search engine, the search engine will then show you what sites are linked to your site. In the case that there aren’t many sites linked up to yours, or that the sites that are linked up have low search engine rankings, consider launching a link popularity campaign. Essentially, this entails contacting quality sites and requesting that they exchange links with your site. Of course, this requires checking out the rankings of the websites you want to link up with. Linking to popular, quality sites not only boosts your search engine ranking, but it also directs more quality traffic to your website.

Search engine rankings are extremely important for a successful Internet marketing campaign. Before you go out and hire a search engine optimization company, try taking some of the simple steps listed above, and see if you can’t boost your rankings yourself. Don’t ever ignore this all-important factor in Internet marketing. Remember, the higher your search engine ranking, the more quality customers will be directed your way.

Brand advertising is only for big brands right? McDonald’s, Coke, Apple… they pay for splashy ad banners on websites and billboards by the road side. Not to mention sexy TV ads. What about your online business? Guess what… you also need to invest in brand advertising. Surprised? Read on.Spending all your advertising dollars on paid search (i.e., Google) to drive traffic to your website is crazy. Okay, maybe not crazy… but really, really expensive. That’s why everyone tells you to search engine optimize (SEO) your website. That way your site will show up in “natural” search results when a prospect types in a keyword you care about. And that’s huge since natural search clicks are free of charge!

But while most people click on sponsored listings based on ranking (that’s why marketers splurge to get ranked number one), many will click on a natural search listing based on recognizing the brand. So brand awareness matters big time if you want to increase the likelihood that prospects will click on your search listing. This is especially true since research shows that people click on natural search listings more than 70% of the time!

Not convinced of the importance of brand awareness? Then let me say it another way: people are more likely to buy from a brand they’ve heard of.

Here are some ways to create brand awareness for your online business:

* Issue press releases. Doesn’t matter how big or small your company is. Let your prospects know when you have important news that they’ll find compelling. And these days it’s pretty easy and costs only $25 to $100 to issue a press release. Interested? Take a look at PR Newswire and 1888 Press Release to get started.

* Run ad banner campaigns. Yes, buy ad banners! Banner advertising is a great way to generate brand awareness with your target prospects. And there are lots of ad networks and websites that cater to advertisers with limited marketing dollars to spend. For example, check out these ad networks: BuySellAds and AdBrite.

* Publish content. Creating and publishing informative content is more important than ever in making prospects aware of you and your brand. So write articles, comment on blogs (create your own!), participate in online forums… and always mention your brand. Just be patient as it does take awhile. But before you know it you’ll start to create brand awareness (and website traffic too!)

* Leverage social media. There’s a lot of buzz about Facebook, Twitter, YouTube… to name just a few social media sites. And whether or not you understand what these sites are all about… your business needs to participate. It really does. So invest the time to learn how social media can help you get the word out about your brand.

There’s a lot to chew on here… so make sure and pace yourself. You don’t need to do it all at once to start getting prospects to recognize your brand.

How about first doing a press release on that big customer you just landed? Meanwhile, get started running an ad banner campaign that really cements your brand in the mind of your target market. And get in the habit of commenting on blog sites you like to read. Then see who in your company (maybe you) likes to write and put them in charge of your website’s blog. Next up is launching your website’s Facebook page, Twitter account, and then some videos for YouTube.

As I said… there’s a lot to do! The good news is that every step you take generates more brand awareness. Did I mention that prospects are more likely to buy from you if they’re already familiar with your brand?

It will definitely be a waste of money if you just do banners without the right expertise. Effective advertising with banners can be done when you, as a promoter, advertise your product in web sites that are related to your niche. This is will help you hit the right target by promoting to the right customers. For some, they join advertising networks relevant to their niche. This gives them more edge at getting quality and relevant traffic, too. You simply cannot allow irrelevant clicks from people who are not your product’s target buyers anyway. The more targeted your approach is, the more specific slice of your target populace you will get.

Try to avoid the mistakes committed by marketers in the past. There are new forms of internet banner advertising that you could use these days. Just aim for a more targeted approach in this endeavor and you will surely see results. Contrary to what other marketers say, banners as advertisements are still a prevalent force in online promotion. Do not be dismayed by the negative comments you read or hear. Check for yourself the true potentials of getting great results from banner advertisements.

Good question, simple answer. Web site specific advertising has been around for many years and in the recent past it has evolved into much more than just a simple banner or piece of text being placed on a web page.

Now, you could rush off and find the cheapest website to advertise on or you could do your homework first. There are several ways that are available for advertising online these days which include but are not limited too:

Banner advertising

Text Advertising

Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay Per View Advertising

Pay Per Click Bidding

Rich Media Advertising

… and more.

My focus in writing this article is to show you how you can increase your monthly traffic from advertising and turn it into a sale or lead by using a simple straight forward method. In order for me to do this I will be using an example:

Let’s suppose that you wanted to advertise teddy bears. Your online store hasn’t made much money ever since it started and you really need this to kick off! The most important step is to find a niche that you can market in.

Geo Targeting: You don’t want people from another country (unless you offer international shipping of course) or people that are not interested in your advert to even view it. Therefore it is vital that you find a proper niche site that will bring you in targeted visitor traffic.

So, you should find a site that is about childrens’ books, or children’s games or even gifting idea websites. That way you know that the visitors that come to your site are looking for precisely what you have to offer.

Have attractive adverts. Budget permitting, try finding a company that will design attractive flash advertising banners for your site that is animated, gives a clear description of why your teddy bears are superior and is small in virtual size to allow of quick downloading. Keep your banners or text as short, catchy and simple to the point as possible.

Do not waste your hard earned cash. I can not stress this point enough. Do not pay per month. Especially if the site in question has limited or no tracking capabilities, can not give you precise reporting and does not support rotation and/or rick media advertising. The likelihood of this site being published by amateurs would be very high in contrast to a site that can offer you results and statistics.

You should only be paying per impression or per click. Anything else will negate the possibility of targeted driven results and lower your return on investment.

Internet advertising and marketing provides the advertiser with precision results each and every time. It becomes very important that businesses need to know exactly where their advertising budget is spent and how it is being utilized. With other advertising media such as print, TV or Radio, it is almost impossible to gain precise analysis of which marketing techniques bring about the most positive response. Sometimes businesses spend thousands in marketing trial and error which leads to large losses in company capital. However, with internet advertising it is always possible to generate precise understanding and targeting of markets and therefore generate an impeccable return on investment.

Coupled with the fact that internet advertising is much cheaper than other media – you will also find that the results are measurable and consistent in growth. Companies have a canvas on which to paint in terms of graphical and rich media content when it comes to advertising online. The advertiser also has the ability to implement direct contact access with a potential client/customer by simply deploying interactive advertising.

Easily targeting niches is another reason that internet marketing and advertising is fast becoming the only reasonable means to promote a business. Getting into direct real time contact with a customer is an advantage that has already been greatly exposed to large companies and have been taken full control off. Smaller businesses should not negate the advantages of advertising online as this is a much more cost effective and revenue generating method that, if used correctly, will bring about desirable results in the long and short term.

Because of the scalability of internet advertising – companies have complete control of when, where and how adverts are displayed across networks. They can include rich media files such as animation, interactivity, music, videos and the like. They can prompt users to engage in many activities that will lead users to their content and thus continue to convert a sale.

The cost of having a computer and access to the internet, whether it be in the work place or at home, is greatly decreasing and therefore increasing the number of internet users and the daily need to access information quickly and conveniently – online media is becoming a must in the daily life of millions of people world-wide. Why would any company chose to miss out on this potentially explosive market for advertising their business?

You should always remember that planning a proper internet marketing campaign is key to the success of it thereof. Ensure that you know your market well, that the publisher has shown proof of the market and number of potential displays and that the advertising is properly tracked based on your needs.

You may want to design simple, effective and attractive adverts that are commonly displayed on prominent parts of a medium. Try many different angles to the same advert and after a few weeks re-evaluate which ones attract the most attention and then divert to only implementing those specific adverts.

Below are a list of the top 20 reasons that you should advertise online utilizing the many different methods that are available. Because Internet advertising and marketing is so flexible it is advisable that you always know exactly what you are doing and how your advertising is being displayed to your potential customers.

1. To Establish A Presence
Approximately 750 million people (1998) worldwide have access to the World Wide Web (WWW). No matter what your business is, you can’t ignore 750 million people. To be a part of that community and show that you are interested in serving them, you need to be on the WWW for them. You know your competitors will.

2. To Network
A lot of what passes for business is simply nothing more than making connections with other people. Every smart business person knows, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Passing out your business card is part of every good meeting and every business person can tell more than one story how a chance meeting turned into the big deal. Well, what if you could pass out your business card to thousands, maybe millions of potential clients and partners, saying this is what I do and if you are ever in need of my services, this is how you can reach me. You can, 24 hours a day, inexpensively and simply, on the WWW.

3. To Make Business Information Available
What is basic business information? Think of a Yellow Pages ad. What are your hours? What do you do? How can someone contact you? What methods of payment do you take? Where are you located at? Now think of a Yellow Pages ad where you have instant communication. What is today’s special? Today’s interest rate? Next week’s parking lot sale information? If you could keep your customer informed of every reason why they should do business with you, don’t you think you could do more business? You can on the WWW.

4. To Serve Your Customers
Making business information available is one of the most important ways to serve your customers. But if you look at serving the customer, you’ll find even more ways to use WWW technology. How about making forms available to pre-qualify for loans, or have your staff do a search for that classic jazz record your customer is looking for, without tying up your staff on the phone to take down the information? Allow your customer to punch in sizes and check it against a database that tells him what color of jacket is available in your store? All this can be done, simply and quickly, on the WWW.

5. To Heighten Public Interest
You won’t get Newsweek magazine to write up your local store opening, but you might get them to write up your Web Page address if it is something new and interesting. Even if Newsweek would write about your local store opening, you wouldn’t benefit from someone in a distant city reading about it, unless of course, they were coming to your town sometime soon. With Web page information, anybody anywhere who can access the Web and hears about you is a potential visitor to your Web site and a potential customer for your information there.

6. To Release Time Sensitive Materials
What if your materials need to be released no earlier than midnight? The quarterly earnings statement, the grand prize winner, the press kit for the much anticipated film, the merger news? Well, you sent out the materials to the press with “The-do-not-release-before-such-and-such-time” statement and hope for the best. Now the information can be made available at midnight or any time you specify, with all related materials such as photographs, bios, etc. released at exactly the same time. Imagine the anticipation of “All materials will be made available on our Web site at 12:01 AM”. The scoop goes to those that wait for the information to be posted, not the one who releases your information early.

7. To Sell Things
Many people think that this is the number 1 thing to do with the World Wide Web, but we made it number seven to make it clear that we think you should consider selling things on the Internet and the World Wide Web after you have done all the things above and maybe even after doing quite a few more things from this list. Why? Well, the answer is complex but the best way to put it is, do you consider the telephone the best place to sell things? Probably not. You probably consider the telephone a tool that allows you to communicate with your customer, which in turn helps you sell things. Well, that’s how we think you should consider the WWW. The technology is different, of course, but before people decide to become customers, they want to know about you, what you do and what you can do for them. Which you can do easily and inexpensively on the WWW. Then you might be able to turn them into customers.

8. To make pictures, sound and film files available
What if your widget is great, but people would really love it if they could see it in action? The album is great but with no airplay, nobody knows that it sounds great? A picture is worth a thousand words, but you don’t have the space for a thousand words? The WWW allows you to add sound, pictures and short movie files to your company’s info if that will serve your potential customers. No brochure will do that.

9. To reach a highly desirable demographic market
The demographic of the WWW user is probably the highest mass-market demographic available. Usually college-educated or being college educated, making a high salary or soon to make a high salary, it’s no wonder that Wired magazine, the magazine of choice to the Internet community, has no problem getting Lexus and other high-end marketers advertising. Even with the addition of the commercial on-line community, the demographic will remain high for many years to come.

10. To Answer Frequently Asked questions
Whoever answers the phones in your organization can tell you, their time is usually spent answering the same questions over and over again. These are the questions customers and potential customers want to know the answer to before they deal with you. Post them on a WWW page and you will have removed another barrier to doing business with you and freed up some time for that harried phone operator.

11. To Stay In Contact With Salespeople
Your employees on the road may need up-to-the-minute information that will help them make the sale or pull together the deal. If you know what that information is, you can keep it posted in complete privacy on the WWW. A quick local phone call can keep your staff supplied with the most detailed information, without long distance phone bills and tying up the staff at the home office.

12. To Open International Markets
You may not be able to make sense of the mail, phone and regulation systems in all your potential international markets, but with a Web page, you can open up a dialogue with international markets as easily as with the company across the street. As a matter-of-fact, before you go onto the Web, you should decide how you want to handle the international business that will come your way, because your postings are certain to bring international opportunities your way, whether it is part of your plan or not. Another added benefit; if your company has offices overseas, they can access the home offices information for the price of a local phone call.

13. To Create a 24 Hour Service
If you’ve ever remembered too late or too early to call the opposite coast, you know the hassle. We’re not all on the same schedule. Business is worldwide but your office hours aren’t. Trying to reach Asia or Europe is even more frustrating. But Web pages serve the client, customer and partner 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No overtime either. It can customize information to match needs and collect important information that will put you ahead of the competition, even before they get into the office.

14. To Make Changing Information Available Quickly
Sometimes, information changes before it gets off the press. Now you have a pile of expensive, worthless paper. Electronic publishing changes with your needs. No paper, no ink, no printers bill. You can even attach your web page to a database which customizes the page’s output to a database you can change as many times in a day as you need. No printed piece can match that flexibility.

15. To Allow Feedback From Customers
You pass out the brochure, the catalog, the booklet. But it doesn’t work. No sales, no calls, no leads. What went wrong? Wrong color, wrong price, wrong market? Keep testing, the marketing books say, and you’ll eventually find out what went wrong. That’s great for the big boys with deep pockets, but who is paying the bills? You are and you don’t have the time nor the money to wait for the answer. With a Web page, you can ask for feedback and get it instantaneously with no extra cost. An instant e-mail response can be built into Web pages and can get the answer while its fresh in your customers mind, without the cost and lack of response of business reply mail.

16. To Test Market New Services and Products
Tied into the reason above, we all know the cost of rolling out a new product. Advertising, advertising, advertising, PR and advertising. Expensive, expensive, expensive. Once you have been on the Web and know what to expect from those who are seeing your page, they are the least expensive market for you to reach. They will also let you know what they think of your product faster, easier and much less expensively than any other market you may reach. For the cost of a page or two of Web programming, you can have a crystal ball into where to position your product or service in the marketplace. Amazing.

17. To Reach The Media
Every kind of business needs the exposure that the media can bring, as we touched on in reason #5 “To Heighten Public Interest”, but what if your business is reaching the media, as a newswire, a publicist or a public policy group. The media is the most wired profession today, since their main product is information and they can get it more quickly, cheaply and easily on-line. On-line press kits are becoming more and more common, since they work with the digital environment of more and more pressrooms. Digital images can be put in place without the stripping and shooting of the old pressrooms and digital text can be edited and outputted on tight deadlines. All the these can be made available on a Web page.

18. To Reach The Education and Youth Market
If your market is education, consider that most universities already offer Internet access to their students and most K-12′s will be on the Internet within the next few years. Books, athletic shoes, study courses, youth fashion and anything else that would want to reach these overlapping markets needs to be on the Web. Even with the coming of the commercial on-line services and their somewhat older populations there will be nothing but growth in the percentage of the under 25 market that will be on-line.

19. To Reach The Specialized Market
Sell fish tanks, art reproductions, flying lessons? You may think that the Internet is not a good place to be. Well, think again. The Internet isn’t just computer science students anymore. With the 70 million and growing users of the WWW, even the most narrowly defined interest group will be represented in large numbers. Since the Web has several very good search programs, your interest group will be able to find you, or your competitors.

20. To Serve Your Local Market
We’ve talked about the power to serve the world with a Web page. How about your neighborhood? If you are located in San Francisco Bay Area, the Raleigh NC area, Boston or New York, there is probably enough local customers with Web access to make it worth your while to consider Web marketing. A local Palo Alto, CA restaurant even takes lunch orders through the Internet! But no matter where you are, if the big client has Web access, you should be there too.
